Dynamic Digitized Global Citizens and Western Pacific University

I admire the digital learning culture embraced by Western Pacific University (WPU). It is no doubt they are on their way to becoming a leader in the teaching and learning of programs they offer. The not too distant future will see them achieve EXCELLENCE as they  propel organizational systems and processes along the quality assured pathway they are actively pursuing.

WPU offers the Certificate in Higher Education Foundation Studies (CHEFS) program. They have gone to great lengths to deliver this program in partnership with international organizations such as the CISCO Academy and Open Education Resources Universities (OERu). The CHEFS program is designed to equip the graduate with Foundation Mathematics, Digital Learning, Academic Research and Critical Thinking. It (CHEFS) is a prerequisite to all Bachelor Programs offered at WPU where teaching and learning is paperless. You can seek further information on their programs at https://www.wpu.ac.pg

As a parent and a Papua New Guinean in the higher education sector, I look forward to seeing WPU increase the scope of the programs they offer as they innovate as an organization, motivate their human resources and thrive as a leading producer of dynamic digitized global citizens. Power on WPU!

Other higher education institutions (HEIs) should embrace this example to produce (employable and or entrepreneurial minded) human resources that will be relevant to current industry trends and skill requirements. HEIs should not be allowed to deliver programs that were produced more than a decade ago.

Academic programs should also provide students the opportunity to specialize in subject specific areas. For example a HEI may offer a Bachelor of International Business program. The program should then offer opportunities to specialize in (1) Bachelor of International Business Management or (2) Bachelor of International Business majoring in Accounting.

HEIs should not be allowed to offer the same curriculum for more than a decade as industry trends change regularly in this information age.

A dynamic Alumni office is required to maintain  industry liaison/partnerships and keep track of graduate performance.

This information is vital for any HEI to make evidence based decision on the future and relevance of its academic programs.

HEIs just like businesses cannot continue to manufacture the same products for an already saturated market.

The national Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology (DHERST) has in a short space of time delivered innovative policy changes and plans paving the way ahead to a "smart, wise, fair and happy society (higher education sector) by 2050."

The implementation of these directives across the sector (by individual HEIs) is the responsibility of the organization's leadership.

God bless PNG.
